Emilia Pérez

Producer 1: Hey, we need to get our movie funded in France. I think we should talk to as many companies as possible.

Producer 2: I get your point, but most of these companies focus on specific subjects like LGBTQ representation, black representation, international diversity, multi-lingual projects, escapism through action, and some just fund musicals.

Producer 1: That’s true, but we have a script for all of them. We can tailor our pitch to match their interests.

Producer 2: Really? You have scripts that cover all those themes? So you want to shoot all of them simultaneously?

Producer 1: Absolutely! For LGBTQ representation, we have a heartfelt coming-of-age story. For black representation, we have a powerful historical drama. For international diversity, we have a cross-cultural romance. For multi-lingual projects, we have a globe-trotting adventure. For escapism through action, we have a high-octane thriller. And for musicals, we have a vibrant, feel-good musical.

Producer 2: Wow, that’s impressive. If we can show them that we have exactly what they’re looking for, we might just get the funding we need. We just just need to split it up between all the movies

Producer 1: Nope, just one.

🎶 Review of Emilia Pérez: A Genre-Mixing Mexican Musical 🎶

(Verse 1)

Emilia Pérez is bold, but there’s room to debate,

A blend of all genres, yet each kept in its crate.

We see dancing for kids, then brutal cartel,

But locked in neat boxes, they don’t always gel.

(Chorus)

Yes, thrilling and wild with no time to get bored,

Yet each genre separate, no seamless accord.

The laughs and the horror don’t merge like they should,

Though the story keeps pulling, it’s not fully good.

(Verse 2)

Its critique of corruption and cartel ties,

Lands hard in some moments, but other parts lie.

The songs at their best have you tapping your feet,

But forced tunes and flat lines make some feel defeat.

(Bridge)

Applause in the court felt too staged to be real,

And each genre’s style felt boxed off in its feel.

The moments of heart felt a bit out of place,

In the mix of its genres, it lost some grace.

(Outro)

With themes deep and daring, it’s still worth a view,

But the mash-up’s too tidy, no fusion felt true.

A ride that’s ambitious but boxed in a cage,

Emilia Pérez left me torn on its stage.
