If you are looking for a family-friendly comedy with a touch of heart and humor, you might enjoy Champions, a film about a former minor-league basketball coach who is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. He soon realizes that despite his doubts, together, this team can go further than they ever imagined. The film stars Woody Harrelson as the coach and Kaitlin Olson as his estranged sister and assistant. The film also features a diverse cast of talented young actors who play the quirky and lovable players.
The film has some positive aspects, such as the chemistry between Harrelson and Olson, who deliver some witty and hilarious dialogue. Olson also gives a great performance as the more optimistic and supportive sister, who tries to help Harrelson overcome his personal demons. The film also does a good job of portraying the challenges and joys of living with intellectual disabilities, without resorting to stereotypes or pity. The film celebrates the diversity and resilience of the team, who come from different backgrounds and face different obstacles.
However, the film also has some negative aspects, such as the uneven acting of Harrelson, who sometimes overacts or underacts his scenes. His character is also not very likable or sympathetic, as he is often rude, selfish and irresponsible. The film also follows a predictable and formulaic story arc, with few surprises or twists. The film could have explored more in depth the problems and struggles of the players, such as poverty, racism or family issues. The film also makes light of some serious topics, such as drinking and driving, hit-and-run accidents and extortion, which could send the wrong message to younger viewers. As someone who was involved in a hit-and-run accident with the Italian police last year, I found this aspect particularly disturbing and insensitive. Thankfully, the reviewer was not seriously injured. We suspect that the driver will not be held to justice, since the driver was the Italien police itself.
Overall, Champions is a decent comedy that can entertain and inspire families and sports fans. It is not a masterpiece or a classic, but it is not a waste of time either. It has some laughs, some heart and some lessons. It is a film that can make you smile and cheer for the underdogs.
